Sustainability and climate resilience

Old Street Quarter is being designed to meet an ambitious sustainability standard set by the project team. It will seek to meet and exceed those standards set by the London Plan and Islington Council.

The proposals bring together a range of measures to reduce carbon emissions, improve environmental performance and create a healthier, more resilient neighbourhood for the future.

Comfortable, energy-efficient homes

  • A fully electric development with no on-site fossil fuels.
  • Homes will be designed to maximise natural daylight, solar shading and ventilation, helping reduce energy demand and stay cooler in hotter weather.

Reusing existing buildings

  • Retaining and reusing existing buildings will reduce demolition and construction.
  • We will also seek to lower the embodied carbon associated with construction through efficient use of materials and lower-carbon building methods.

Greener, healthier places

  • There is currently no green space on the site.
  • New trees, planting and public spaces will support biodiversity, provide shade and create healthier places for people to live and spend time.
  • Sustainable drainage and green infrastructure will also help manage rainfall and improve resilience to climate change.

Sustainability certification

All buildings on site are designed to achieve BREEAM Very Good certification, which means the buildings meet and often exceed sustainability standards.
